Home Original Ownership Paul Whiting The Launching Italy 1976 Sth Pacific Half Ton Cup

Candu II was originally built for Ian Gibbs specifically to sail in the World Half Ton Cup I have a copy of an article from the November 1976 issue of Sea Spray magazine which is a write-up about the Half Ton Cup in Italy that year.

I know the boat was owned by Ron Legge of Wellington for many years. He changed the name to Vice Squad and made a number of substantial modifications including moving the motor from the forward cabin to behind the companionway.

He also closed in the transom and painted her navy blue with gold signwriting - very regal.

Colin Rankin bought her in the mid 90s and renamed her Can Do Too. He refurbished the boat at that time and then made some extensive modifications during 2000. A new Thompson-designed mast was fitted and moved aft 500mm. The new mast is 1.4m longer than the original, has 2 sets of swept-back spreaders so the running back-stays have gone. A long, Thompson-designed fin-bulb keel was also fitted. The boat now draws 8 feet and is considerably more stable.

I bought a 1/2 share of the yacht in October 2000. The following year we fitted a Bakewell-White-designed rudder and the boat is now great to steer — very responsive. Can Do Too won the RPNYC Spring Series 2001 on both Club and PHRF handicaps. I bought the remaining 1/2 share in March 2002 and have continued racing her in the RPNYC racing programme. Check our results. I changed the name back to Candu II in 2004.

I'd like to learn more of the history of Candu II. If you have any information or know people I could contact, I would really appreciate it. Please email me at carol.love@candu2.org.nz with any information you may have.
