Ian Gibbs
In 1972, Bruce Farr designed and built a 27
foot yacht, Titus Canby, his first keeler — his definition — "a
fast, affordable cruiser". Titus Canby won the Pacific Half Ton
trophy in her first season.
Titus Canby, renamed Tohe Candu
by new owner Ian Gibbs, won the Pacific Half Ton Cup again in 1974.
In 1976, Ian Gibbs had Paul Whiting design
and build another half tonner,
Candu
II. He took her to Italy for the world Half Ton Cup where the regatta was plagued by very light
wind and short, choppy seas which proved frustrating for the new boat. The write up in Sea Spray was entitled 'Like
sitting on a rocket but unable to light it'.
In 1977 Ian entered Candu II in the
South
Pacific Half Ton Cup and came 3rd overall. Newspaper Taxi,
developed from the Candu II lines won the Cup and Cotton
Blossom, Farr's latest 1/2 ton design, took 2nd place.
Ian Gibbs had another Half Tonner designed by Bruce Farr,
Swuzzlebubble. He raced her in Sydney along with Jenny H and
Smir-noff-agen to retain the Southern Cross Cup for New Zealand.
Titus Canby (back to it's original
name) is still racing competitively in Wellington - the crew wear T-shirts
with the slogan "First by Farr".
